How To Test Your Website In Different Browsers

I just came across this great site, where you can test the layout in different browsers, from IE, firefox, safari, opera, sea monkey, flock .... And the good thing is you can test it in different versions of each one. For example you can test your layout in IE 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The only problem is you need to wait few minutes till all the screen shots load.

But try it out, you might like - http://browsershots.org/.

I can already imagine how many inbound links will this site get. Many. Probably every web designer is linking already. The problem we experience is usually CSS and different browsers. So you always have to test your site in most of the browsers and spot the problems in layout.

Writing Keyword PPC Ads

E-mail
Pay Per Click
Friday, 06 June 2008 00:00
Before you start writing your PPC ads, you should have your keywords list ready. If you use excel sheet you can easily group your keywords by topic.

For example

Group 1 keywords

  • Hummer car
  • Hummer spare parts
  • Hummer used cars

Group B keywords

  • Used electric guitar
  • Fender guitar amp
  • Gibson Les Paul Guitar
  • Guitar gig

Always divide your keywords into groups because keywords associate with different pages of your website.

Marketing experts claim that using keywords in your PPC advertisements ads can increase your advertisements click through rates as much as 50 %. So choosing the right keywords for your PPC ads is really important.

When writing your PPC ad you should know what you want to achieve with your PPC ad. Do you want visitors to hire you, do you want to sell them your products, do you offer tutoring lessons, or do you want them to sign up for your newsletter or any other service.

This is important to know, because you will use so called call to action in your PPC advertisements. You can write few sentences down and express what you want from your visitors. You don’t have to write few short sentences in this step. That comes later. Just put all your ideas on paper. Remove unnecessary words in this step and move forward with writing your text.

One last thing to consider before you begin writing your PPC ad text is what the immediate benefits of your product or service are. These too, will be used in ad text, so take the time to write out several benefits that you might draw from as you’re writing your ad text.

Once all these steps are completed you can begin writing your PPC ad. Many times when people are writing ads they fail to take into consideration the people they want to reach. Each generation has different communication; they probably use different tone, slang, writing style. So you have to adapt to that target audience with your PPC ads.

For example teens behave much different then grown ups. So if you want to target teens you have to use their language in your ads. So your call to action for your teen audience you target with your PPC ad could be “Get your Ipod and be cool”, For example seniors would no react to that ad. Or an ad for elderly people “Get a cruise for your golden anniversary”

Another ad for teens that you want to sell clothes is “Become a metal head today and be hype”. A slogan for old people would be “Share your precious memories”. Teens don’t react to ads like that.

Write your ads for different groups of people. Don’t target everyone with your PPC ad. You will fail. PPC programs are different so make sure to learn everything about the PPC program you intend to use.

Most PPC programs like Goggle and Yahoo advertising use and algorithm that is combined by the paid amount per click and the ad relevance and how compelling the position of the ad is to the user.

Position of your PPC ad is everything. Google displays PPC ad either on the top or the right side and that depends on how much you pay per click and !! how relevant and compelling your ad is.

If your ad is written well and performs well, you will pay less for the ranking spot that you want or pay the same and get a higher spot in PPC ad list.

Here are some requirements for nearly every PPC program:

  • Use your keywords in your PPC ad text. Remember ads that contain keywords can perform up to 50 percent better than PPC ads without keywords.
  • Make your offer. Tell your potential costumers what you sell or what you have and why they want it. Don’t exaggerate about the benefits of your products or services. Write accurate and compelling PPC ads.
  • Call visitors to action. Research has proven that call to action works. Include your call to action in your PPC ad to motivate your potential buyers or visitors to click on your ad.
  • Include keywords. Put your keywords in the ad title and the body of the ad text. Keywords make your PPC ad relevant and compelling and you get more exposure for a smaller cost per click.
  • Create a sense of urgency. It is used by most of the marketers today and it works extremely well. Use some kind of sense of urgency in your PPC ads in your potential costumers like for example “limited offer” “stock running out”. When you were in a shop and a sales person told you they have only 1 item left, weren’t you compelled to buy it right away? Didn’t you feel that sense of urgency to purchase that product right away? That is the purpose of using sense of urgency in your PPC ads.

Draw clicks, not views. Write your PPC ads with the intention of making people to click on it. But don’t use that old lame phrase “Click Here Now”. Draw as many potential visitors as you can to your site. Design your ads and make them compelling for visitors and get clicks rather then impressions.

Always write your ad long and cut it. Start writing your ad in full sentences and than remove all the necessary words from the ad. At the end keep only the strongest words. Check the ads that are already running in PPC program and try to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

Always use powerful words in your PPC ads. There is a text limit in PPC ad so use the powerful words that describe what you want to achieve with your ad. For example instead of “skilled” use “professional” and instead of “markdown” use “discount”.

Always test and experiment what works for your PPC ads. When you write a PPC ad and that PPC ad performs well, change it just a little bit and see what happens.

Only with testing and experimentation you can achieve your PPC goals. PPC is quick, effective way of advertising your products or services on the web. It is not as expensive as other types of advertising. But still it is not an easy task to do. Experiment and test your ads, keywords, ad positions all the time to be successful. You will always adjust your PPC ads because of changes in your products and services for example.

The next step is to make the click worth the visitor’s time. And that is when the landing pages come in.

Increasing Keyword Success In Pay Per Click Campaign

Thursday, 05 June 2008 00:00

Some people think that picking the keywords and employing them on the website is the easiest task. That is just the first step in the SEO process. There is much more you have to master to make your site really SEO optimized. Some designers think that after they finish with the website tagging and keyword insertion that their work is done. But that is far form the truth.

You can’t just throw keywords in the PPC advertisements and expect them to do well. Writing the proper ads is a hard task. And it should be mastered.

When visitor sees your ad and click on it and comes to your site, what do they see? Your landing page is as much important as the text in your PPC ad. And sometimes choosing the advertisement text in your PPC ad requires comparison testing.

Keyword testing is not a simple task. It is the process that has to be done over and over again. PPC ad testing never ends. You should test and try different keywords all the time. Only with regular PPC ad testing you will increase your keyword success and maximize your keyword ROI.

PPC advertising is getting more and more expensive these days.

It is still not as expensive as traditional methods of advertising. If you are running on small budget and you think that PPC advertising will increase your budget, you might be right - if you do regular maintenance and testing of your PPC ads.

It all starts with your PPC advertisement, so that’s where you must first concentrate on maximizing your return on investment.

Alt Tags SEO Optimization

Search Engine Optimization

Alt tags is the alternative text used for describing images. Alt tags are displayed on the site while the emages are loading, or when you hover over the image with your mouse. They also help blind people who are using text readers to read your page.

Alt tags are another place where you should insert your keywords to improve your rankings in SERPs. Even if your text already have keywords you could still improve and reinforce your most important keywords.

Again some people claim that Alt Tags are useless, the other think they help improve rankings. Some designers abuse alt tags and just fill them with all kind of keywords. Again that is alerting search engines. But still alt tags are required if you want your site to validate with W3C standards.

So I recommend to use keywords in Alt Tags, but don’t over do it.

And even if Alt Tags don’t have any value for search engines ( I am sure that is not the case), they still help visually impaired people browse your site.

An example code of Alt Tag is:

Alt=”Hummer H3”

The whole image code looks like this:

<img width=”500”

height=”360”

src=”hummerh3.jpg”

alt=”Hummer H3 for sale”>

Body Text, Keywords And SEO

Body text is the text that visitor see on your website. The text between Header Tags is the body text. Body text is another place where you can use your keywords from your keywords list.

Don’t just stuff the keywords in your text. The good rule is to use keywords once or twice in each paragraph of your page. If you are using your keywords too often, search engines might penalize your site and mark you as spam.

Use keywords frequently but don’t use them just because of search engines.

Body text can be found in your page code between body-text tags: <body>Insert BodyText</body>.

Other tags that I will mention here are used for indicating special text formatting.

They are:

<b>Bold</b>

<i>Italics</i>

<strong>Strongly Emphasized</strong>

<em>Emphasis</em>

<li>New Line in List</li>

Each of these tags is used for special formatting of the word or phrase in your body section of your code. Search engine crawlers also use these tags for determining your rankings so you should use your keywords when using these tags. But again the rule is don’t stuff. You might alert search engines in negative way.

Just use your keywords when appropriate.

So posting the text on your page that is readable by search engines is not hard at all. But there are issues with text and crawlers too. You should be careful about the following things:

  • Text embedded in JavaScript of Flash can’t be read by search engine.
  • Text used in image files (jpg, gif, png, bmp)
  • Text that is accessible only on a submission form or other portion of the page that requires some action or interaction with the user

If search engine bots can’t see your text on your website, they can’t index it for visitors to find it. So having the text that crawlers can read is most important.

Also never use any tricks and try to hide the text in an attempt to fool search engines because you will fail. Some people put hidden text with the size of 1px on the page stuffed with keywords and they think search engines will not figure it out. Or they use the same text color as the background and try to hide the text. In both cases they will almost certainly be banned or penalized by search engines.

Anchor text And SEO

Search Engine Optimization
Monday, 26 May 2008 21:13
Anchor Text is one of the most important SEO element on your website. Anchor Text is actually a text found in hyperlink on your webpage. Anchor Text is often used to many times and that affects ranking in negative way. Anchor Text is one of the most important search engines rankings factors. When a search engine spider crawls your site it automatically follows the links that you have on your page. If they are text based links that is perfect for your rankings because search engine bot does not see only link, it sees also the keywords in the link text called Anchor Text.

We know two kinds of Anchor Text, yours and Anchor Text of everybody else. So it is really important that you consider which keywords you will put in your Anchor Text. So be careful with what keywords in Anchor Text you link out and also what keywords are other people using in Anchor Text when they are linking back to your page with Anchor Text link.

Anchor text links can be inbound (linked to other pages within your site) or outbound (linked to other websites’ pages). Anchor Text is really a powerful SEO element of your site.

Each time search engine bot crawls your site, it is looking at several site elements, like site’s topic, links linking to other websites and the links that are coming to your site (incoming links).

So if you have a site about Hummer cars you might have several articles about Hummer cars, hummer stores, where they can buy Hummer cars, Hummer car models etc. When a search engine spider crawls your site it is going to see that the topic of your site is Hummer cars (that will be determined from the keywords used in your page text).

In next step it is going to follow the entire site’s links. If they link out to other sites that have similar topic as your site and if you use text based links, you are going to benefit from search engine rankings.

That’s why you should be careful when you are creating text links on your website. If you are using wrong keywords in your Anchor Text you will not get as much positive feedback from search engines.

Often made mistake is using Anchor Text “click here” in your anchor text. “Click here” phrase is not related with your website content topic. So when the crawler follows that link with Anchor Text “click here” it does not see the relevant text.

The best way to do it is to use as much keywords from the keywords list you developed earlier in the SEO process and use those keywords in Anchor Text of your links.

The code for the Anchor Text link is:

<a href=”http://www.hummer.com”>Hummer Car Models</a>

The second strategy is varying your Anchor Text all the time. When you repeat your Anchor Text over and over on your site it looses its real effectiveness. It can cause your site to rank lower in SERPs. So use multiple keywords and phrases in Anchor Text. This way you can vary the Anchor Text and maintain the consistency in your keywords and phrases from your list.

You should focus on Anchor Text of your incoming links. Anchor Text is one of the most important elements of your SEO strategy. So basically if you gain a lot of links with Anchor Text for example about Hummer you could rank in top 10 Google within a week for some of the keywords about Hummer cars. For example you could rank for Hummer Cars Venice Beach repair, Used Hummer H3 Cars Hollywood etc.

There are many ways to get incoming links. One way are reciprocal links. The reciprocal links are most effective when they come from sites that are relevant to your web site.

Regarding reciprocal linking you need to ensure that your site is linked in proper way. Instead of simple link it is better to provide the other person a code that he can just copy and paste.

You should also focus on keywords that are used by other webmasters when linking to your site. The keywords that are searched the most, but are as narrowly related to the topic of your website as possible, are the right keywords. The goal of Anchor Text is to optimize your site for better rankings in SERPs.

The next question you are probably asking yourself is how often you should use link with Anchor Text per page. Different people - different stories. The good rule is to use Anchor Text as many times as there is a solid reason to do so. Don’t overuse Anchor Text in your content, but if you have a relevant link that can be included, use it, even though you used Anchor Text four other times on the page.

You should use a good analytics program that tracks the links on your web pages. That way you should find out which Anchor Text are the most effective by checking your daily traffic flow.

Anchor Text are especially effective in dynamic content, the content that is changing frequently. That goes especially for Blogs. Blogs usually change or update frequently. That is a fresh content that helps improving your rankings in SERPs. If you update your content frequently crawlers will not get bored and will more frequently visit your site.
