Meta description tags And SEO - Do They Have Value For Search Engines

Meta description tags are another very important element of your webpage. Some search engines use the description as the text below the linked title in search results. Some search engines pulls the text from your page content instead of meta description tag.

But all the search engines read the meta description tag. Search engines use meta description tag as one of the ranking factors of your webpage in search engines.

Meta description tags are valued differently by different search engines. Google is giving less importance to Meta Description Tag. Google rather looks for the text on the page than in Meta Description Tag.

And Google doesn’t display Meta Description Tag as text in SERPs. It uses the content surrounding of the keywords on your site and that is called a snippet.

Yahoo puts more weight on Meta Description Tag than Google and uses Meta Description Tag as text below the website link in SERPs.

Meta Description Tag is not the most important element on your page code. But you should still have your Meta Description Tag because search engines do use it. Use your Meta Description Tag on each page of your site and follow these Meta Description Tag guidelines:

  • Use maximum 200 – 250 characters for your Meta Description Tag. That is approx. 2 sentences.
  • Each page should have unique Meta Description Tag
  • Meta Description Tag should include important keywords.
  • Text in Meta Description Tag should be different than the text it title tag.

The Meta Description Tag is found below the title tag in your code. It looks like:

<META name=”description” content=”We are selling Hummer h3 and h2 models in our store….”>

There are different speculations about the importance of Meta Description Tag but still iI suggest to use it for each page of your website.

How To Use Keywords In Title Tags - SEO

Title tags

Title tags are probably the most important SEO tags found on almost every website and if you place your keywords at the beginning of title tag the effect is even bigger.

The max allowed characters in title tag is 60 – 65 for proper display of title tag. It differs from search engines to search engine. Search robots, spiders use the title tag to determine the topic of that page. That is the reason to always use the keywords in the title tag and use them as close to the beginning of title tag. That text with keywords in title tag will be displayed in SERPs as the linked title that the users will click to get to your website.

If you have a website about Hummer car sales the most important keywords are for example buy Hummer h3, or Hummer h2 store Los Angeles etc. So using the title tag like Hummer H3 Los Angeles …. is the best title to use.

The spider will first read your title tag, because title tag is the first element of your website and then check the content of your website as well as the keywords used in title tag and other places of your website. title tag

SO remember to target the most important keywords in the title tag. You may use 20 or more keywords on one page, but 2 or 3 keywords are most important for that page. These keywords are the keywords you should use for your title tag.

It is also important the each title tag is unique on your website. Title tag should be as descriptive as possible and use your most important keywords for that page in title tag.

Now check your source code. The following code that contains title tag is just a sample. Title tags are different from page to page.

<HEAD>

<TITLE>Hummer h3 cars for sale Los Angeles</TITLE>

<META name=”description” content=”We are selling Hummer h3 and h2 models in our store….”>

<META name=”keywords” content=”hummer, h3, h2, cars, sale, los angeles, buyer, salesman”>

</HEAD>

If you take this code apart line by line, here’s what you have:

<HEAD>: This is the opening head tag.

So the title tag is this  <TITLE>Hummer h3 cars for sale Los Angeles</TITLE>

It depends on how will you set your title tag. If you use Dreamweaver you can just switch to code view and set the title tag and if you are using CMS like Joomla or Drupal you can set your title tag with setting the name of the page for each article, or there is a special window to insert the title tag.

The title tag should be placed in the HEAD section of your code or it will not work. But that is already done with CMS and Dreamweaver.The title tag sometimes provides the first and the only impression of your webpage in search engines. It can attract visitors to click on your site or make them go to another site.

Keyword Placement Tags Attributes And SEO

Having the right keywords is not enough. Once you have the best keywords you have to use keywords properly to get value from them. If you know what the best keywords are is not enough, using keywords on your website properly is the key to success.

Once you’ve selected your keywords you can’t just drop them all over your site. In previous articles you’ve read a lot about the tags, text, and links where you can use your keywords. But just knowing where to use keywords is not enough. You need to know where and how to place the keywords on your site so the search engines will interpret keywords in proper way and take notice of your site and keywords.

Alt Tags and Attributes

You must have heard about alt tags in the past. One thing you should know that alt tags are not really tags, the correct name is alt attributes. There are different attributes that enhance the tags that you are using on your website.

Alt which means alternative, is a special attribute that is used as alternative text in place of graphics.

Most people don’t know the difference between tags and attributes. There are several tags and attributes used when we are putting keywords into the code of our website and I will explain the 5 most popular.

Header Tags Keywords SEO

Header Tag is also very important element of your site. Header Tags are used for setting your page with different levels of headings and subheadings. The value of Header Tag is again something many people have different opinions. Some say Header Tag has not value for search engines, other claim they are vital element of proper SEO.

The truth lies probably somewhere between both claims. From a design point of view you should use Header Tag on your site. Header Tag tells us what the segments of body text are about.

Header Tag denotes important info, and you can use your keywords when writing Header Tag. Search engine bots check the text in Header Tag and how it fits in the text around it. So first level headings (usually H1 tags), should contain the most important keywords.  And lower lever headings (H2 – H6) should contain less important keywords.

It’s important to make that distinction — keywords should work in your headings. If they don’t, avoid using them. It is ok to use Header Tag without any keywords.

Even though your H1 tags use the most important keywords, you shouldn’t use them all over your web pages. BE CAREFULL about that. Many SEOs are claiming that you should use H1 heading only once per page. Using it more than one time might cause search engine crawler to decide that you are actually spamming, and the result would be decreased ranking in SERPs. In worst case scenario your site might be completely wiped out of search engine index.

The structure of your page should look like this:

<H1>Header 1</H1>

<H2>Header 2</H2>

<H3>Header 3</H3>

<H4>Header 4</H4>

<H5>Header 5</H5>

<H6>Header 6</H6>

Many times you won’t use H3-H6 tags and that is ok. You can also use CSS to set the font, color, font size of your Header Tags.

Just Installed Jom Comment Pro For Joomla

I must say the installation was easy, you just select the file and upload it in the admin section of Joomla. It has a lot of parameters, like spam alert, you can enable different fields, it uses rel=000000"nofollow" tag for posted urls, it even uses akismet spam protection from Wordpress.

For now I don't have any complaints, I want to test it for few weeks and then I can give the actual review. But usually there are bugs that are not detected in the first few hours after installation.

So I need to test Jom Comment before writing review. For now it looks cool.

2 things that I have spotted already is the link read more with anchor text read more, keyword read more is useless for ma rankings so I dont know why it is not under rel="nofollow"tag that prevents spiders from following the link.

Stupid mistake.

The other thing is that apparently my pages are opening much slower. There is a big difference in speed after Jom Comment installation.

Wow, that will probably be the reason to delete it from my Joomla.

UPDATE after 3 hours

The site is really slow, it is not my imagination. It takes 17 seconds to load the home page. 17 freaking seconds!!!!!

And it takes 15 seconds on average to load a single article. I have seen many comments on Jomcomment forum about how slow the site becomes after Jomcomment pro. Users blaim Ajax, they say Ajax is the cause for pages loading slow.

Another problem is that wysiwyg editor times out when loading image and it shows empty page. This component is a horror and people actually pay for it. I mean it has a lof of functions like Wordpress Akismet and other cool stuff, but it makes my site unbearably slow.

So I can't edit the article from front end. I have to switch to administrator to edit freaking article and add the following picture.

Here is the image how much script code Jomcomment inserts in your code

jom comment

Here is the link to Jom Comment and be sure to read some of the comments especially from the person nemanjas who said

So... I'm looking for another solution, as my hosting company warned it will turn off my entire site if it continue to overload server.

Jom Comment support was not helping, which is expected, since it looks that this component has major design flaw.

UPDATE after 1 hour later

I uninstalled Jom Coment Pro. Now my home page opens up in 3 seconds, single article also in3 seconds. Before it took 15 seconds to open my home page. Jom Comment Pro is definitely not the comments component I will ever use.

After uninstalling Jom Comment Pro, that you have to pay for and is awfully slow I have installed !JoomlaComment 3.25. Install was simple, I could even import comments from Jom Comment Pro from database that was left after uninstall.

I must say that !JoomlaComment 3.25 does not slow my pages down.

I think it is not so advanced as Jom Comment but still at least it doesn't put my site in nursing home. First think I've noticed is that the pages are not W3C valid anymore and I am kind of sad. I always want to keep all of my site W3C valid. But because of !JoomlaComment 3.25 this site is not longer valid, at least the pages that have comments.

YOu can enable which categories will have comments enabled, you can disable all static articles, I personally don't want people to comment on my non blog pages like contact us, quote page etc.

It is quite simple and I think I like it. It has rel="nofollow" tag on website urls, so that is a plus. And I am still in the process of testing in thoroughly.

UPDATE

Yes for all the outbound links the rel="nofollow" is enabled. That is good. I am only concerned about the W3C validation that !joomlacomment does not pass. But on overall it is great component for comments.

Highly recommended. Link to !JoomlaComment

Migrating from Joomla 1.0 to Joomla 1.5

Well I must say it was a road to hell. No kidding. I had to do so much trial and errors all the time. Test, test and test again. First of all I used the migration tool, that pulled all the old information from the Joomla 1.015. Then I installed the fresh Joomla 1.5 in the separate folder. I used that migration file to import in my new Joomla 1.5 install.

I had to do some major overhaul with my template. I used to have a template with tables, but I said to myself why don't I make a table less template just for fun. So I did it, I used only divs instead of tables.

I had to use the new markup for the php code in the template, that was fun also, NOT.

After that I installed the SEO component.

This was a major problem for me. First I used Smartsef, that did not work. Later I turned to my friend Shumisha, who made sh404 component and this works like it should. I was still having problems with the urls and other minor stuff.

But I did not ask on forums, because I though the component was just not developed well yet. SO I went back and forth with trying sh404 and smartsef, and finally with the help of Shumisha I tuned it correctly.

I wanted to have _ instead of - in my urls, so I had to set to tell sh404 to pull the data from title of the page instead of title alias. In first case you get urls with _ and in second you get urls with -. So I did not want that Google penalizes me for duplicate content because if you change all the urls Google will think you have 2 duplicate pages for each content page.

So I fixed that. I still have some glitches with Gallery, but this one looks much nicer.

Joomla 1.5 migration was not fun. It was a major problem, but at least now I know how to do it correctly. Well everybody learns through trial and error.

Tuning out...........
