Filters, Penalties And Search Engine Optimization

Original content is one of the most important parts of each web site. A lot of internet sites are simply duplicating the content from other sites. And that is bad. So be sure to prepare for side effects if you are using a lot of duplicate content.

It is really simple to just copy and paste the content from other sites, that the other guy has spent few hours creating it.

Well Google is monitoring that and can punish your site for having duplicate content.

I mean you can have a little duplicate content on your site, it will not hurt you, but you may waste some of your link authority.

Google uses penalties and filters:

Search engine penalties are used for the sites that are trying to trick search engines. Usually such sites are using black hat seo techniques that do more harm that good to your site. Penalties happen only occasionally and the owner of the site usually knows exactly what he did wrong. If a site get a penalty from Google it may be totally excluded from Google index, I think that is the worse penalty that Google has.

The result – NO MORE TRAFFIC FROM GOOGLE.

Usually the line between optimal search engine optimization and tricking the search engines is thin and curvy. Your site need a seo specialist that will not harm your site or use any black hat seo techniques. In the past I have seen a lot of sites that were harmed by seo’s with poor knowledge. They used a lot of spamming, black hat and other seo tricks and the site was put into supplemental results or even removed from Google index.

Google also uses filters

If your site is getting only few visitors per day, Google may be using some of the filters for your site – the result is poor traffic.

Usually owners of the site do not have the slightest idea what they did wrong. They do not know that their site was filtered and why.

Here are some of the filters that Google and other search engines may be using on your site. So try to fix that.

  • Duplicate Content: Duplicate content is a big NO NO for search engines. Google uses this filter very often. Only the original (one copy) articles should rank in the search results. Google and other search engines filters out such pages but these pages still pass link authority, so many webmasters are using that in a bad way.
  • Reciprocal Linking: Reciprocal linking is a thing of the past. Few years ago every webmaster was building links simply by exchanging links with other web sites. Well Google is using new filters just to fix this problem. Linking to sites that are closely connected to your site, have the same theme or industry is still good and valuable. But linking to bad sites that are acting like link farms is a BIG NO NO. Try to avoid that at all cost. Usually the traffic went way up after I removed the reciprocal links from client’s sites. In the past webmasters exchanged links with all kind of websites and that is bad. Exchanging links with high PR sites, that have original, good content is still very valuable, but do not create pages and pages of links that will only do you harm. Usually having a link page with link exchange form and text can already alarm Google, so try to put links on usual pages and rename link page to something like friendly sites or similar.
  • Limited Authority Filter: A website that has most of the pages thrown in Google supplemental results can bring many of those pages out by simply putting original, unique and interesting content on them.
  • Over-Optimization Filter: Try to use different anchor text for each page when building internal links. If 2 pages have the same site wide anchor text, the one would rank high and the other would go into supplemental index. So be careful about that.

The penalties are more serious than filters. A website can recover faster from filters than from penalties. So it is really important that you know why a filter of penalty has been used.
