Your Sitemap Can Be Automatically Discovered By Search Engines
Google, yahoo and Msn have agreed to support the new sitemap discovery system called as autodiscovery. This means that you can tweak your sitemap so the major search enines will automatically discover your sitemap. You have to add a sitemap location in the robot.txt file. That is it, it is so simple.
Usually webmasters are still submitting sitemaps under google.com/webmaster console, but regarding to searchengineland.com this is not necessary anymore.
So it the past you had to manually tell the search engines where is your sitemap located, now they will automatically check your robots.txt file for the sitemap location.
This is really a thumbs up act, and robots.txt file is already checked by all search engines.
To add a sitemap location to your robots.txt file simply add this line
Sitemap: LOCATION-OF-SITEMAPS-FILE
So for my site it would look like this
Sitemap: http://seoandwebdesign.com/sitemap.xml
Another good news is that you can add multiple sitemaps under your robots.txt file.
Usually webmasters divide their sitemaps into parts if the sitemap is too big.
So just list each sitemap location in the robots.txt file.
